The day I saw myself in these pictures, I did not even recognize who I was. I didn’t feel on the inside like the girl on the outside. After having 2 kids, I took care of everyone but, myself. I could not believe that that was me! I started by getting a personal trainer because I was embarrassed to walk in a gym without knowing what to do. Then, I started taking Bodypump classes and Spin classes and learned to love exercise.
Growing up a dancer, I thought fitness was more for athletes. Through Group Fitness classes, I found workouts that I actually loved to do that were choreographed to music. Now, I had to learn everything. It wasn’t just about losing weight. It was about being healthy. Not just taking care of my kids but, taking care of my kid’s mom (me!). I went back to college and took human development and nutrition classes. I got control of my nutrition, counted my calories, and watched myportions.
In a matter of months, I lost over 50 lbs. My friends and coworkers were so amazed they asked me to teach them how I had done it. That gave me the inspiration to start getting all my fitness certifications. I wanted to pass the gift of knowledge I had gained onto others. I began to choreograph my own workouts and started my own class. I have helped my class members lose weight, regain confidence and reclaim their health. I now LOVE sharing the gift of fitness and health with others. It is more than a job, it is my ministry.
We’d both tried different types of diets over the years. Each time, we successfully lost weight, only to put all of it back on…and then some.
After some health concerns, Shannon & I decided it was time to change our lifestyle. We realized that diets with an expiration date don’t work. Furthermore, we decided that a fitness lifestyle was something we had to do together. A little over a year ago, we got serious about tracking our calories and exercising. Our exercise consists of cardio and weight lifting.
Shannon’s lost approximately 50lbs, and I’ve lost a little over 60lbs. Since we’re both lifting now, we’ve lost track of the scale…but keep feeling the difference in the way our clothes fit, and how our reflections appear in the mirror. Also, we have more energy and less “aches & pains” than we did a year ago.
We’re not where we want to be yet, but we get closer everyday. For the 1st time in years, we like the way we look; and, more importantly, the way we feel.

I started my weight loss journey in January 2011.
I was at my heaviest. It hasn’t been easy and I’ve struggled, and even gained back all of what I had lost. I got to where I am now by working out, eating right and smaller portions, track my calories eaten and burned.
I haven’t reached my goal yet but I will get there.
Like most moms, I found it very difficult to get back into “shape” after my fourth son was born. Even though I tried to work out on a regular basis, I had a closet full of excuses that I would throw up when someone challenged me to really get fit.
I was stuck at a weight I didn’t like. I didn’t like how I looked in the mirror and I was frustrated that my dress size wasn’t budging. About four years after my last child was born, I decided to become a certified Zumba instructor. This small step served as the ember that set my passion for fitness on fire.
But, I soon saw that the cardio benefits of Zumba were not enough so I added a Pilates certification to my resume’, which gives me the toning and flexibility training all women need. Yet, despite the fact that I was teaching eight plus classes a week, I was disappointed that I wasn’t loosing fat. It wasn’t until I modified my diet, cutting out bread and bread products (most of the time), increasing protein intake, and eating modified portions that I truly saw a full body change. My goal now is to keep setting goals. I am working on becoming a personal trainer and adding strength training to my weekly routine. I can honestly say at 40, I am in the best shape of my life.
After years of being lethargic, having no motivation, and watching my weight climb to well over 200 pounds, I decided at the age of 48 that I wanted to have more energy. I was tired of being tired all the time! My kids were almost grown, and I had missed doing a lot with them because I had let my weight get out of control.
I started slowly with spinning classes, and added other classes in (BodyPump, Zumba, Pilates, Hard Bodies) a little at a time. Along with this, I got my nutrition in line and stuck with a mostly high protein, lower carbohydrate diet, and the pounds began to disappear. As I grew stronger, my energy levels increased. I had such a passion for Spin that I certified as a Spinning instructor about 15 months ago, and now pass that love for Spinning along to my class participants. I also love to run, and have run several half marathons this year, along with numerous smaller races.
In whole, I have lost a total of 75 pounds, and maintain that loss with an active lifestyle and healthy nutrition. I have more energy now at 50 than I did at 25! I plan to use that energy to be around for the grandchildren I hope to have in a few years.
Hi, my name is Heather Riggins and I am currently in school within my last quarter upon externship to become a certified pharmacy technician, CPhT in which I will graduate in December.
I am married and have 9 year old son name Zachary whom has a love for baseball and maintaining active by running in races and cross-country trails with his mother. I also have a love for strength-training.
Working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle has made me feel better than I ever have. Anything is possible… I love motivating others and being an inspiration. I have lost 59-60lbs currently total.
